Emotional Support Animal Letters

An emotional support animal (ESA) letter, also known as an ESA letter or prescription, is a document provided by a licensed mental health professional that states the need for an individual to have an emotional support animal to alleviate symptoms of an emotional or psychological disorder.

Emotional support animals are most commonly cats and dogs. However, any animal can be an emotional support animal. These animals provide emotional support for individuals with emotional and mental health issues through their mere presence.

ESAs are not the same as service animals or therapy animals. While service animals are specifically trained to perform tasks or work for individuals with disabilities, emotional support animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals with mental health conditions. ESAs can help their owners cope with symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other psychological or emotional conditions.

To qualify for an ESA, you must have a psychological or mental health condition diagnosed by a licensed professional for which your animal provides comfort and support.
